Flathead Culture

The foundations of the Sqelixw and Ksanka are built upon the values of relativity and wholeness. You will see in us a people who know their place in an ever-changing world. The culture of the people of the Flathead Indian Reservation has come into a modern world of education and technology with the vigor and drive that has placed them in the forefront of self-sufficiency on a national tribal level.

The Sqelixw and Ksanka are respected for their level of self-governance and economic growth as well as their extensive success in cultural resource and natural resource preservation. These positive attributes of the indigenous people of the Northwest plains have been interwoven into their fabric for generations. Cultural teaching of spiritual connectivity to the Creator and His creation have led to the present day success of these confederated tribes.

While visiting the home of these tribes, you will have the opportunity to gain knowledge of the past, present, and future of the Sqelixw and Ksanka thanks to the concerted effort the Tribe has invested in the preservation of the oral histories through such establishments as the Salish Culture Committee, the Kootenai Culture Committee, the Cultural Preservation Department, and The People's Center. Our government has carefully managed the earth resources on the reservation with much care, professionalism, and foresight. The family and social values are still celebrated as the people continue to care for each other with emphasis on the elders and youth who are cherished and have so much respect for the history and future of our people.
